THIS IS SO UPSETTING
An incensed Rachel Maddow tore into Republican senator Ted Cruz and called for further gun control on her Thursday show.
Maddow started the show by telling anyone with a connection to the massacre in Newtown that they might not want to watch the segment. She then shared new details of the shooting that were uncovered by the Hartford Courant. The one that seemed most chilling to her was that Adam Lanza took just five minutes to shoot 152 bullets and kill 26 people.
“Had he only had access to ten-round magazines instead of 30-round magazines he would have had to reload 14 times,” she said. “He would have needed 14 spare magazines beyond the one in the gun with the extra round in the chamber. Reloading 14 times. You think he would have still pulled off the whole thing in less than five minutes?”
She then turned to Cruz, who had an extremely bitter exchange with Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein about guns. Feinstein —who came to political prominence after the assassination of San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk and George Moscone — grew so angry at Cruz that she accused him of treating her like a sixth-grader.
“Let the record show that you can be a United States Senator for 21 years, you can be 79-years-old, you can be the chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and one of the most recognizable and widely respected veteran public servants in your nation, but if you are female while all of other those things, men who you defeat in arguments will still respond to you by calling you hysterical and telling you to calm down,” Maddow said.

a real thing I just saw someone say on here
oh my god. just. oh my god.
(via erinthesails)reading this made me want to fucking die
doesn’t turning your popular cis!dude bro ship into cis!ladies defeat the purpose of femslash february? like didn’t femslash february start to shine a light on femslash ships that don’t get as much attention as dudebro slash ships in fandom?
by changing your dudebro ship into ladies you’re not shining light on femslash your just adding more fanwork to ships that already get most of fanworks in that particular fandom
also pls don’t come to me and tell me you can’t make fanworks of existing ladies because they aren’t any ‘interesting’ canon ladies when when you guys have created intrecate back stories for characters that only showed up once so you could ship them with another dudebro

- Males can have opinions on sexism
- White people can have opinions on racism
- Straight people can have opinions on homophobia
- Cis people can have opinions on trans issues
- Just because you aren’t part of an oppressed group doesn’t mean you’re automatically privileged and ignorant with no life problems
- Our society is made up of all different races, genders, and orientations and disregarding anyone’s ideas based on these isn’t going to help anyone
Thank you
and privileged people talking over the marginalized isn’t going to help either
for example with racism if you’re white and in a group of white people and someone brings up race and you happen to have educated yourself on it by all means speak up and fight for what’s right
but if a poc is talking about their lived experience then speaking over them is basically the opposite of fucking helpful and if you don’t see how that is oppression in practice than you’ve missed the entire point of talking about these issues in the first place
this isn’t about people sharing their opinions and sharing their feelings
this is about making people get heard who do not have a voice in society at large. our voices in society do not have equal weight. the voice of privilege speaks loudest. if you are not prepared to allow those marginalized people a voice without speaking over them with the power of your privilege, then you are working AGAINST the fight against oppression. you are an oppressor.
stop whining about being told to shut up and listen in conversations on marginalized people. what the hell do you think they’re forced to do every day of their lives? they have to shut up and listen, or if they speak they are told to shut up. or in this case, they’re told that the voices of people who have no lived experience of their struggle should be considered to have equal weight in the conversation.
you do not have equal footing in these conversations. you have MORE footing as the privileged group AND THAT IS THE EXACT FUCKING PROBLEM.

— personabull, on white male privilege and mra bullshit
Men feel the pressures of society just as much as women. Through my internet searches I have come across nothing that encourages body positivity in men. This needs to change.
Please, tell me of the struggles this dude faces as a white male. I’m really interested in hearing about the alternate reality that he inhabits.
WHAT A DUMBASS POST
CRY HARDER WHITE BOY
Booohooooo who says all girls wanna look like barbie dipshit
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you guys honestly saying that just because he’s a man and white? Are you fucking kidding me? You all do realize what you’re technically saying right? You’re pretty much saying that that this guy has no right to be sad because there are people out there who have it worse. I thought that was one of the main things you never tell a person with depression, so why are any of you saying that here?
Seriously, what world do you guys live in? What if a white man abused as a child? What if they were told that they were not good enough by their family and and people around him? Do you think every white guy lives a life where everybody loves them, nobody thinks they’re ugly and they get everything they want by simply asking for it once? You have to be a complete fool to believe that.
Are you trying to tell me that a white person can’t be depressed because he is “privileged over everybody else”? Let me put it to you like this: Let’s say a white man loses his job, is insecure about his body (because maybe he’s not very tall or muscular, which is what society today tells a man he should look like), and has no friends. Now let’s say you have a successful black business woman who makes a lot of money, has a great social life, but also has depression. Which one of these two people has more right to be depressed? The answer: NEITHER!!!! Because depression is not always about how successful you are life or what you have. Depression is feeling that you’re not a good enough person no matter who you are and how hard you try.
All you that contributed to the above commentary should be ashamed of yourselves. There are people out there, include white boys, who hate themselves because of their looks. They will self harm just like anybody else with self hate issues, but none of you care. All you care about is their gender and skin color. I’d hate to see what any of you would say if ever met a cutter that happened to be a white guy. What would you say when if showed you his scars? Would you laugh in his face? What if he told you that he attempted suicide? Would you roll your eyes at him?
None of you are any better than those racist and sexist people you claim to hate so much. You don’t want equality. You want anybody that shares physical similarities with “the oppressor” to feel like shit. You want people who to be looked down upon because of the their race and gender; two things they have no control over. How is that any better than someone belittling a black/hispanic/asian/etc person because of a broad and untrue generalization?
I’ve come to realize this important fact: Tumblr isn’t the safe haven for logical people that so many people want to claim it is. It’s full of immature, hypocritical , and ignorant people just like any other website. I don’t care if I lose followers because of this. This has to stop.
^this is probably one of the best things I’ve read.
The last paragraph. If I wasn’t on mobile I’d bold the everliving Hell out of it for emphasis.
bold-ed the last bit for person above
What the fuck is wrong with your recent posters I even had to edit out the applause gif. Fucking really?
Yes, of COURSE there’s a rather widespread issue between men AND women about expectations and body positivity, but that has shit-all to do with the perception of women as sexual objects needed primarily as “something good to look at” and, probably more important, “something to stick my dick in.” You’re missing the point and flipping a shit over people because they’re telling you just how irrelevant your bullshit whining is. You know why it’s bullshit? It’s NOT just as hard to be Ken. It’s not. I am utterly amazed at how unattractive men can be and still be QUITE popular in practically every respect. Being unattractive as a male barely inhibits your ability to get a job (there are far fewer jobs that, by society’s standards, you should not be able to get if you’re not “hot enough”), it does rather little for finding a Barbie to fuck (you’ve gotta be pretty far out of the range of ‘normal’ either physically and/or mentally to not have someone attracted to you at some point, and Barbie is very much EXPECTED to “put out” for you so long as you put in “effort” of any irrelevant kind), and just overall expectations for body conformity are extremely lax in general for men! Yes, there are OBVIOUSLY absurd male model figures no one can hope to match expectations with, but that is in no way equal to the systematic blame and dissatisfaction and constant pressure being put on women to meet expectations set forth by our society (and Barbie).
These people aren’t giving this guy shit for being white because he’s white/male specifically, they’re giving him shit for complaining that being a white male is detrimental to his mental state. THAT is the fucking joke everyone is pointing out. Everyone has troubles, that much any reasonable person can see. Nobody said this guy doesn’t have emotional/physical security issues. He’s getting shit for whining because he’s specifically saying “It’s just as hard.” It is NOT. It’s just not. You can cry and cry and cry all you want that you’re not having the best time, and you’re probably right that things could be better, but that simple phrasing, “It’s just as hard,” is complete bullshit. He has a tremendous amount of advantages at his disposal. Christ, he’s not even that bad looking!! It’s rather beside the point, as was said because anyone can suffer from depression and anxiety due to societal pressures, but it is very much a problem to equate those pressures to ones FAR more prevalent and damaging than what faces white men.
Speaking of white men, by the way, that was only even brought up BECAUSE he has that specific advantage in life that minorities do not. Again, “it’s just as hard.” You know what’s worse? Who the fuck knows “black Ken’s” real name? When do you even SEE a black Ken? Why should it be so easily considered by me as being a “black version of Ken” in the first place? (honestly I’m sorry for this, as a white man. Thanks to having Ken, I never had to have such a thought cross my mind) Nobody (white people) gives a shit about that to even begin setting unrealistic expectations on black men. You have the nerve to say “It’s just as hard” ?! People are calling this white guy out because he doesn’t know what he’s even comparing his problems to. He’s just complaining that “it’s hard!” and moving in on an already full conversation whining that HIS problems should see just as much air time. He’s literally taking away from discussions being had specifically because he thinks of his problems as more widespread and more dramatic than he could even realize BECAUSE he is in such a position to begin with. He has the privilege to be so misguided to think his problem is “just as hard.” He doesn’t know, and honestly even I have hardly scratched the surface of understanding just how much harder women and minorities have it, at a base line, than a well-off-looking attractive white boy.
“don’t feed the trolls” is such a fucking obnoxious concept
or like because someone is a troll than suddenly we should stop taking them seriously
it just pisses me off bc when you are acting in a way indistinguishable from real attitudes that exist in the world that are harmful, you are perpetuating the same kind of harm ass those attitudes. i don’t care if it’s a joke, i don’t care if it’s just for fun or to piss people off. the reality is that trolls can and do perpetuate and represent attitudes that actually exist, and are harmful aspects of society.
if some dickbag is being an asshole i’m going to call them out. but not because i think i’m going to change their mind. i don’t give two shits about them.
troll or not, there’s one thing that will always be worthwhile in interacting with dickbags in a public forum.
people who are oppressed or marginalized by those harmful attitudes will know that there are people who won’t play into it. who speak out against it, and would defend them if they were attacked. for a half a second, you make someone feel like a safe space might exist in the world.
and that’s fucking worth it.
Once upon a time, we know, there really were knights and castles and quests, and maps whose blank spaces warned of dragons and magic. That being so, a medieval fantasy novel only needs to convince us that the old myths were true; that wizards and witches existed, and that monsters really did populate the wilds. Everything else that’s dissonant with modern reality – the clothes, the customs, the social structure – must therefore constitute a species of historical accuracy, albeit one that’s liberally seasoned with poetic license, because that vague, historical blueprint is what we already have in our heads.
But what happens when our perception of historical accuracy is entirely at odds with real historical accuracy? What happens when we mistake our own limited understanding of culture – or even our personal biases – for universal truths? What happens, in other words, when we’re jerked out of a story, not because the fantastic elements don’t make sense, but because the social/political elements strike us as being implausible on the grounds of unfamiliarity?
The answer tends to be as ugly as it is revealing: that it’s impossible for black, female pirates to exist anywhere, that pixies and shapeshifters are inherently more plausible as a concept than female action heroes who don’t get raped, and that fairy tale characters as diverse as Mulan, Snow White and Captain Hook can all live together in the modern world regardless of history and canon, but a black Lancelot in the same setting is grossly unrealistic. On such occasions, the recent observation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz that “Motherfuckers will read a book that’s 1/3rd elvish, but put two sentences in Spanish and they (white people) think we’re taking over” is bitingly, lamentably accurate.
Foz Meadows is fabulous, also I think I could read about real life female pirates all damn day.

Anonymous asked: Typical girl logic: "See something you don't like or is wrong. Do we fix it? NOPE! Do we make something better to replace it? NOPE! Then let's complain and cry about it. Problem unsolved." And women wonder why almost all of society's advancements have been by men...

i am so shocked at getting this message
1000% unexpected, i definitely could not have recited this word for word, as it is literally the most original creation i have ever seen
